Georgi Bordner co-translator and editor of The Librarians Manual, Spanish edition

In May 2013, Head of Technical Services Georgi Bordner, along with her colleagues Dennis Tucker and Douglas Butler, completed a revision and translation into Spanish of The Librarian’s Manual. The book has just been published by the Association of Christian Librarians under the title, El manual del bibliotecario.

The Librarian’s Manual is a textbook used to train librarians around the world. According to the publisher, the goal of The Librarian’s Manual is to teach a high level of library practice to non-professionals working in less than ideal conditions. It has been used successfully in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Georgi and her colleagues translated much of the English edition and also added new material to bring it up to date and make it more relevant for Latin American readers. They hope that it will be used in developing and improving libraries throughout the Spanish-speaking world for many years to come.

Library faculty recognized for service to ACL

Two members of the Library faculty received plaques at the Association of Christian Librarians annual conference in June, recognizing their service to the Association. Sandra Yaegle was recognized for seventeen years of service on the editorial team of The Christian Librarian, where she had a number of leadership roles, including advertising editor, news editor, and team liaison to conference. Georgi Bordner was recognized for ten years of service to the Commission for International Library Advancement (CILA), eight of which were as Team Coordinator.

ACL publishes the print and online versions of the Christian Periodical Index, the leading guide to evangelical perspective journal articles.

This year, ACL members convened for their annual conference June 8-11 at Evangel University in Springfield, MO. University Librarian Georgianne Bordner gave a presentation titled “Collection Assessment as a Tool for Improving Collection Development.” The presentation described an ongoing project to determine the University Library’s readiness to support the University’s QEP of global competency and to identify materials that we need to acquire to strengthen the collection. Because of demand by members, Georgi gave this presentation twice at the conference.

Georgi also served on a panel that gave a presentation titled “International Libraries – What in the World Can We Do to Help?” The panel consisted of members of the Commission for International Library Assistance (CILA) who shared advice based on their wide range of international experiences. As Team Coordinator of CILA, Georgi led a program for all conference attendees in which various members reported on recent international projects, including the training seminar she, Dr. Leanne Strum, and four other team members gave in Malaysia in Sept. 2008.

At the closing banquet, Georgi was presented with the Association’s Volunteer of the Year award, in recognition of 25 years of service to ACL as an indexer for the Christian Periodical Index, former Board member, and CILA member and Team Coordinator.
