In Memoriam: Lois J. Lehman, 1924-2011

Written by Robert Sivigny, University Librarian

The Library faculty and staff are saddened by the loss of former Library Dean, Lois Lehman, who passed away in Decatur, Indiana, November 14, 2011. Miss Lehman was appointed Dean of the Library in 1980 and served the Library devotedly for fourteen years. She contributed in so many ways to Regent University, perhaps the most significant being her assistance with the design and construction of the present Library building, which was dedicated in the fall of 1984. The special collections & archives reading room on the second floor of the Library is named the “Lehman and Kiewitt Reading Room” in honor of Miss Lehman and her colleague, Dr. Eva Kiewitt.

Before coming to Regent, Miss Lehman was a missionary teacher in Sierra Leone, West Africa and a librarian at Indiana University. She held master’s degrees in English and Library & Information Science from Indiana University.

Under her leadership the Library staff grew to over 20 full time staff, and when she left in 1994, collection holdings totaled over 172,000 volumes. She went on record to say one time: “Only when you attempt the impossible do you test the resources of God. To even dare to attempt building a great research Library would seem unthinkable but for the promise that ‘My God will supply all that you need from His glorious resources in Christ Jesus.’”

After retiring she travelled widely, helping Bible college and seminary libraries in several developing countries. She was an active member of the Association of Christian Librarians, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Berne, Indiana, and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma and Beta Phi Mu sororities.

Those who knew her learned much from her unshakeable faith, strong resolve to tackle difficult goals, and her abounding professional expertise. In testimony, one of her colleagues wrote, “Dean Lehman and Dr. Kiewitt served God and humankind to their utmost in the days they were given, and as long as those of us who had the rare privilege to have known them remain among the living, fond and respectful memories will, as well. How fortunate we were to know them!”

Regent Library will be placing memorial pavers for the new chapel in honor of Miss Lehman and Dr. Kiewitt, who both meant so much to this Library and the University.

We rejoice that Miss Lehman is now with her Lord and King whom she loved without measure.
