Library staff volunteers at Union Mission

Written by Georgianne Bordner, University Librarian

The Regent University Library staff and faculty celebrated Thanksgiving by giving of themselves to help those in need in Hampton Roads. Instead of sharing a traditional potluck meal together, they collected food to be donated to the Union Mission. Then, on the afternoon of November 22, they gathered at the Union Mission’s warehouse in Norfolk to deliver their donations and help sort other food received in preparation for distribution to hungry families. Some members of the group worked on the initial unpacking of the many boxes and bags of food donated to the Mission. Large-size items that were not appropriate for distribution to families were set aside to provide meals for residents of the Mission’s homeless shelters. The expiration dates and condition of the rest of the cans and boxes were checked. The items were then passed on to another group that sorted them by type of food and stacked them on the corresponding shelves. Later, other groups of volunteers will take the items from the shelves to fill boxes that will provide holiday meals for hundreds of needy families. The Library staff finished the afternoon tired, but happy to have had the opportunity to make a small contribution to this important ministry.
